GENERAL SUMMARY:
Reporting to Laboratory Supervisor or Manager, coordinates daily operation of large or technically complex laboratory areas. Coordinates specimen processing, testing, and reporting to ensure standard work methods and consistent quality. Oversees employee assignments, competency, and record keeping. Leads daily management of quality and deviation management. Coordinates technical projects such as instrument evaluation and method validation.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Coordinates daily operations of the laboratory including scheduling employees and daily work assignments across large or technically complex sections of the lab. Ensures appropriate specimen accessioning, testing, and reporting to meet service standards.
* Assists other laboratory staff and leaders to meet or exceed customer expectations. This often involves the use of quality management techniques to gather data and improve processes.
* Compiles and maintains employee records including attendance, work assignments, performance records, proficiency testing, and competency records as required by accrediting agencies.
* Coordinates activities and maintains records of preventive maintenance programs.
* Coordinates the validation of new methods, instruments and software as required.
* Organizes and participates in on-boarding of new employees and continuing education.
* May coordinates the rotation and training of Residents, Fellows, and students in clinical rotations.
* Complies with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment and improvement programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Monitors compliance with regulatory and accrediting requirements.
* Communicates with internal and external customers such as nurses, physicians, and other health care workers concerning laboratory reports, procedures, technology, and related issues.
* Provides direction and guidance for questions and/or problems referred by other technical and support staff.
* Assists leaders with input on staff performance, time and attendance, supply chain management, and overall operations.
* Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
* Completion of an accredited Bachelor's Degree Program in chemical, physical, biologic science, medical technology or clinical laboratory science.
* Requires a demonstrated record of three to five years of progressive responsibility.
* Demonstrated leadership skills, technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions and to coordinate the quality and volume of work.
* Certification at the technologist level from a nationally recognized national agency such as, ASCP, NCA, ASM, AABB, ACS or HEW is preferred.
* Near Acuity: Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
* Depth Perception: Ability to judge distance and space relationships.
* Accommodation: Ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus.
* Color Vision: Ability to distinguish and identify colors necessary to perform job duties.
* Must meet or exceed core customer service responsibilities, standards and behaviors as outlined in the HFHS' Customer Service Policy and summarized below: Communication, Ownership, Understanding, Motivation, Sensitivity, Excellence, Teamwork, Respect.
* Must practice the customer skills as provided through on-going training and inservices.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
* Regularly exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens, organs and tissues. Occasional exposure to radiation hazards. Exposures to odorous and/or toxic chemicals and specimens.
